VDOT Roadway Sign Emergency

A sign above Interstate 66 at mile marker 58.5 was struck by an over-sized load vehicle that did not stop. This hit and run left conduit, light fixtures, and wiring dangling dangerously over the interstate. Virginia Department of Transportation, Northern Virginia (VDOT NOVA) closed three out of four lanes to prevent any further damage. We were called to perform an emergency removal of the conduit, light fixtures, and wiring. A crew of three Lighting Maintenance electricians was dispatched immediately to reach the scene of the incident and carefully removed the dangling remnants of the sign.

LMI overcame a massive traffic jam, which consisted of three out of four lanes closed on Interstate 66. LMI had to rush to the scene and bypass the traffic to alleviate the situation. With permission from VDOT NOVA, LMI utilized the shoulder of the interstate to bypass the traffic. Once on the scene, the crew lifted themselves in a bucket truck to carefully remove the hanging conduit, light fixtures, and wiring without any of the debris causing further damage to the sign, roadway, vehicles, or any bystanders. With the skill and professionalism of the crew, LMI successfully removed the hanging sign remnants without incident.
