DuBurns Arena Lighted Synthetic Sports Field

Coppermine Field House devotes its time, energy and spirit to enrich the lives of others. Founded in 2011 by Alex Jacobs, Coppermine is focused on providing physical opportunities to help grow healthier and more confident families in the Baltimore region.

They have two facilities – one a 42,000 sf facility located on Falls Rd., north of Mount Washington, and the newest one at the in the Canton section of town. After acquiring the operating rights to the arena from the city, they invested in a new indoor synthetic field  and other amenities. In the fall of  2014, the owner team invested in the adjacent outdoor field to create a state of the art, synthetic turf field to accommodate youth baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer and football leagues throughout the eastern part of the city.

Coppermine teamed up with our national sports lighting partner, Musco Lighting to provide the highest quality of light on the playing surface of the field, while minimizing the spill light to the adjacent neighbors.  Coppermine teamed up with Musco and LMI to manage and install this challenging task. This lighting effort was achieved by installing four 70’ steel light poles with 44 energy efficient Musco Green System fixtures.

Due to the extremely poor soil conditions and the high water table as the field is located adjacent to the Baltimore Harbor, we needed to convert the standard caissons to concrete spread footers at each of the four pole locations. This operation required more excavation, concrete, water diversion efforts and safety fencing due the wet conditions and longer construction process.

Power for the field lights comes from a BGE feeder along Boston Street. LMI was required to enter the manhole under the supervision of the city and BGE inspectors and concrete encase the primary ducts to the transformer pad.

All of this work was completed along side Coppermine’s turf contractor, The Sports Force, out of Georgia. Teamwork, cooperation and proper communication were imperative to complete the complex in time for the 2015 Spring Adult Sports Leagues along with a full complement of Children’s Sports Teams and Training.  We look forward to being a part of Coppermine’s growing commitment to outdoor sports in the Baltimore area.
